IS HAVING AN ENEMY AS POWERFUL AS "U.S." A GOOD THING?

Russia Flexes Its Muscles in Mideast

With Russian soldiers occupying swaths of the Republic of Georgia, one might have thought that Russian President Dmitri Medvedev would have more pressing matters than scooting off to the Black Sea summer resort town of Sochi. But last week Medvedev did just that for a pleasant — and possibly ominous — bit of business: entertaining Syria's President Bashar al Assad, one of the few world leaders who have flown to Russia's side during the Georgian crisis. The trip paid off for Assad when Russia agreed to strengthen military ties with Syria. According to the Russian press, Assad also offered to host advanced Russian missile systems on Syrian soil.

The Syrian state media later denied that Damascus was offering to set up Russian rocket bases. But even rumors of such a deal look suspiciously like a Russian response to U.S. plans to set up a missile defense system in Poland, an agreement signed earlier this month at the height of the Georgian conflict and denounced by Russia. Moreover, the rejuvenated Russian-Syrian connection is just one example of how the so-called new Cold War between the U.S. and Russian is spreading to the Middle East, mapping itself onto the region's pre-existing conflicts, and complicating efforts to bring stability to a region that is on the verge of a new hot war.

Since the Iraq war began in 2003, the Middle East has been split by its own not-so-cold war for regional domination between Iran and its allies (Syria, Hizballah and Hamas) and the U.S. and its allies (Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt). Though Russia has been a mostly peripheral player, it has often wound up on the opposite side of Washington. In 2005, Moscow agreed to help Iran develop a civilian nuclear reactor, infuriating the Bush administration, which claims that Iran's nuclear energy program is merely a cover for developing weapons. Russian also supplied Syria with weapons that wound up in the hands of Hizballah, the Lebanese anti-Israeli militant group. Israeli military sources say that these Russian weapons — especially advanced anti-tank rockets — were vital in enabling Hizballah to face down the Israeli army during its disastrous incursion into Lebanon in the summer of 2006.

These tensions are now likely to grow as Russia flexes its muscles in a region where the U.S. is vulnerable. For one thing, Russia sees fewer and fewer reasons to tread lightly around Israel. During the 2006 Lebanon war, Russia condemned Hizballah actions as terrorism, and afterwards claimed it had made efforts to prevent weapons sales to Syria from helping Hizballah. But the war in Georgia highlighted that Israel is itself in a kind of arms race with Russia. Israel was supplying the Georgian army with weapons and Israeli security companies were training Georgian soldiers. And recent Israeli press reports claim that Hizballah has set up Russian-made radar-guided air defense systems since the 2006 war in the eastern Bekaa Valley in order to shoot down Israeli jets.

What's more, ever since the U.S. circulated a draft Security Council Resolution condemning Russia's Georgian invasion, Washington can expect scant Russian help at the United Nations to prevent Iran from developing nuclear technology. This could have dramatic consequences. Israeli officials have been implying that if the U.S. and the U.N. fail to halt the Iranian nuclear program, they will take matters into their own hands and launch air strikes against Iran.

Of course, the new Cold War in the Middle East may end up amounting to no more than a passing chill. Assad's flirtation with Russia could be intended to strengthen Syria's hand in ongoing indirect peace talks with Israel through Turkish mediation. On the other hand, Syrian hardliners opposed to peace could see Russia's backing as one more strong argument for holding out against American and international pressure to recognize Israel.

A disturbing sense of déjà vu adheres to all these alliances, arms races and nuclear programs. The Middle East was a major theater in the original Cold War. Before the Camp David Accords of 1978, Syria, Iraq and Egypt were all Soviet client states; indeed, Syria still has the aging Soviet-era fighter jets and tanks to prove it. And while all stayed quiet on the European front of the Cold War, it got pretty hot in the Middle East. In at least three major wars between Arabs and Israelis (in 1967, 1973 and 1982), the U.S. and the Soviet Union got to see how their weapons stacked up against those of their foe. As the chill spreads today, it's worth remembering that the Middle East is a region where conflicts too often don't stay on ice.

Well I do not think it is good to have a country ask strong as the USA out there. Since right now we are in one war and we can not afford to get into another war with Russia. Because we are not to most liked country out their. But we do have allies out there, so if we do get into a war with Russia we will probably need reinforcements.

No. i dont think its a good thing.
If we have "problems" with Russia and there as powerful us, then things can turn out bad.
But then again you never know if we come into an alliance with them then it would be a great thing, i guess.

"IS HAVING AN ENEMY AS POWERFUL AS "U.S." A GOOD THING?"

Well, my opinion is that having a just-as-powerful enemy is a bad/good thing.

    Cons:
    1. The U.S.A can be held at bay, because of the tie in strength.
    2. In the end, both nations will end up destroying eachother because both have the power to win over the other, but at a drastic price.

    Pros:
    1. The U.S.A. has a chance at having the upper hand in the battle. But only is we makes all the right decisions.
    2. It helps strengthen our nation. Having to 'flex' our 'muscles' to win a battle, will help the U.S. in the long run.

First of all find another energy source besides nuclear. It is dangerous to rely on nuclear technology. It is hazardous to the environment. Second of all this is just M.A.D.(Mutual Assured Destruction) unfolding on us. the concept of M.A.D.:
"The doctrine assumes that each side has enough nuclear weaponry to destroy the other side and that either side, if attacked for any reason by the other, would retaliate with equal or greater force. The expected result is an immediate escalation resulting in both combatants' total and assured destruction. It is now generally assumed that the nuclear fallout or nuclear winter resulting from a large scale nuclear war would bring about worldwide devastation,"
In other words 2 countries have way more then enough bombs to annihilate the other if provoked. If provoked, this attack from both sides would result in weapons so powerful being launched at the other that both sides are destroyed in the process.
Now imagine this happening with the whole world attacking a common enemy with equal power. Eventually there would be such destruction that either the whole planet undergoes nuclear winter or the earth gets torn apart in the crossfire.
Either way the human race goes extinct.

First off Mr.Wilson, I have to say that this article was a total bore. I'm sorry, but it was.

Second of all, Russia needs to stop looking so suspicious and then denying all claims. If you want to do something drastic, then you should at least be accountable for it. Russia wants to take down all of the terrorist countries. Well, they should team up with one of the strongest nations in the world, the U.S. :)
We could take them down together and be BEST FRIENDS!!!!!!!!
But, of course, this will never happen, we will probably end up going to war with Russian and kicking their sorry butt.

I think it's a good and bad thing to have an enemy just as powerful as us. The good thing is that it keeps us on our toes. If we can realize that we have a country that can potentially take us out we will want to stay as strong as possible just in case of war. This brings me to the bad thing which is basically war. Having another country as strong as us but not a major ally can be kind of scary. What if things go wrong between us? I really can't decide whether it's better or worse.

I think that its a good thing to have a enemy as powerful as us. Although I don't think that now is a good time for war. It helps us keep us strong and all but now wouldn't be right to have a war. Because if we went to war the U.S. would be in a very deep economic crisis that we are almost in already. We should wait until things get better, if they do, and then we can prepare for war and hope that our country becomes stronger. That's what I think.

They might be able to use weapons against us. Then if so they can take over our country. If that happen it's goin to be bad. so i think that is bad. we should try to make truce with Russia.

i think that it can be both good and bad. good being that it will make us aware that we have some competition, actually i can put this into a sports perspective...our volleyball team was undefeated until tuesday night (when we lost to TFA) that made our team so much stronger and it also made us realize that we aren't finished yet and we aren't the "best"! so it just gave us things to work on and fix. If Russia were to make us fight or whatever then we would have to work on our weaknessis and realize all the things we are doing wrong and how we can learn from other countries! the reason it could be bad is that many people could die from a war with someone that powerful.

I think that its good and bad having an enemy as powerful as the U.S. Its good that is a country more poweful than the U.S. because if not, we have to much power and will let it go to our heads. Thinking that were the most powerful country and then we'll think we can do anything we want. And if there is a more powerful country we will always be thinking of ways to make new technology which is great.I think its bad because if there is someone more powrful than us they could take over. And who knows what they could do with us.So its good and bad if there is an enemy for powerful than us.

I think that it is good and bad to have an enemy as powerful as the U.S. It is good because it challenges us to build bigger, better, and more powerful things. I'm not talking about nuclear weapons, but something that could be powerful and not swipe half the Earth. We need to be pushed sometimes to get and be able to see what we want. They always say, "bigger is better" and I think that’s what we have to see. In addition, I highly do not think that having an enemy as powerful as the U.S. is a sign of peace. It is a sign of competition and danger. What would be VERY important in a situation like this one is to build and expand our alliances, and to vary the ways that technology could be used. The variety of types of weapons is important because it gives us an edge of what they might not have.

Well, if you see it from the military veiw and the new development of weapons, it is a good thing. the U.S. could compare its weapons and mold it to become better for battles. However, in society wise, no. Having some just as strong as us, go against us would kill millions during the war. If they're just as strong, they could kill so many just as we have. Especially with the new technology, developed weapons, and the soon to be made weapons that are still taking place in development.

I'm guessing this article is about the new "soon to be war" with Russia. In my personal opinion, the US should no better than to mess with a big country like russia. They may be more powerful than the last time we tried to fight them. Also we have another war going on in the middle east which i don't think is headed nowhere for about he next 10 years. So we don't have to get the title "most powerful" country by having so many enemies. We should be making peace not destroying it.

I think that america and russia dont agree and get along with eachother with some problems that they both have. if they dont find a way to solve this problem then more people would have to die and get hurt because eventually it would end up into a war.i think that the U.S. should stop having problems with russia and developing a war and focuse more on just the U.S. because we are having alot of complications in our society alot of people are robbing pharmacys, getting killed and raped, threats are being made to some people, some are suffering from high gas prices, not having enough money, not enough health insurance coverages you know what i mean. so yah, some people are being forced to run bankrupcy to put their houses into closure. so i think that bush should pay more attention to these things and when he does everyone will be happy, safe, and with jobs and help to get health insurance.i think that if the U.S. doesnt stop then more stress will be on the troops and more will lose their lives.especially if you mr.wilson get called to go fight their war then i wish you luck and i will pray for you everyday.

I think we shouldn’t have an enemy as strong as the U.S. but someone who is still powerful and is a little threat. I think that because competition only makes us better and stronger. Having someone who is a threat makes us want to have better army, better technology, and economy. But I think we should not let a country be as strong as us because if they get so strong they could maybe conquer us and make us fallow their countries rules and beliefs. That would be horrible for the US because we are a free nation.

An enemy that is as powerful as us would give us more "drive" to strive to be a more powerful country. It shouldnt reach the point to were its a all out grudge match. Based upon what i know, i dont see what Russia has to offer in trade, ect. Plus this will keep military in top shape ,just in case if a war between anyone.*Back in my old njrotc(navy) i was told that they have subs stationed in the Artic. I think is good but at the same time is bad.If the other country make a deal with the U.S. is good because it make us stronger, with new weapons, technology, etc it could make us powerfull. The country who have the same power as U.S. it could help us to battle or go to war with other countries. At the same time I thing is a bad idea to have a country powerfull as U.S. because you never know if they going to tell other countries what we have. The United States would be spending money in weapons and other things when is not that necessary, and they could be using it in the economy taht is not that good right know. I dont agree with the nuclear weapon, because it could contaminate the nature. And the reality is that a lot of countries dont like the United States and it wont be that good to go into another war with a country who have the same technology, weapons, etc if they are powerfull as us.

No, having an enemy as powerful as the us is not a good thing because having a powerful enemy causes you to make adavancements in military technology and to fixate your economy towards such projects. This means less money for schools, hospitals etc. Also if for some reason you no longer become enemies with said super power, then you have numerous weapons that are stored or disposed of as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. Which in turn pollutes the enviroment.

I believe that having an enemy like russia would not be beneficial for the U.S. because of our economy. I can understand that it could boost our economy by giving more military- influenced based jobs could help our economy but it could also probably damage other foreign relations and even worsen our government's spending habits by having to fuel these new defense projects.

I think that it's a dumb idea for us to pick fights with other countries cause we already have a war going on with the Iraqi's and our economy is already really bad, so like, I think instead of trying to make a cold war we should just make friends with Russia and that way we can focus our priorities on something else.

i dont think that we should have an enemy as powerful as the U.S. beacuse something happens and we get into another battle the russians can team up with iraq and do serious dammage on us. what we should do is become friends with russia not enemys with it. also it is not a good thing because having a powerful enemy causes you to make adavancements in military, technology therfor raising taxes and other expenses on stuff that other people have to pay.

having an enemy would be beneficial to us if we didnt have such a bad economy right now. if we didnt we could be competitive to other countries weapons and research on how to improve our weapons. enemies would give mor jobs to military related people. so right now having an enemy could be bad or good depending on our economy.

I think that having an enemy as strong as the U.S. can be a good or bad thing because it could strethen our community and help out the prices and stuff but then again its also complicated enough because if their as strong as us we could lose if they attack us directly.

For me this is pretty freaky.
its scary because Russia and the U.S. Don't really get along and since we went in to help Georgia that really ticked off the Russians.
Therefor they are pretty much against us right now. And they have Nuclear weapons??! Idk, it just seems way to risky for my taste.
It wouldn't be so bad to have a strong Country like the U.S if they werent against us. But since they are, thats a bad thing.

I think this question is too broad to give a definite answer. A proper response to this question requires other factors in order to be accurate, namely 'who would the enemy be?'

In the majority of cases, it probably is not a good idea to have an enemy as powerful as the nation we live in. The United States bombed Japan during World War II and had devastating results. The United States has also bombed Vietnam, and we've even bombed Iraq. Many people have died because of our actions, and this is one reason why we are considered a world power.

There are exceptions, however, where having an enemy as powerful as the U.S. is good. During the Cold War, Russia became our enemy, and had anything happened to provoke either country, the results could have been devastating and affected the entire world in ways people cannot imagine. This was a case where it was a good thing for Russia that it was our enemy, because for the period of the Cold War the U.S. feared Russia, which meant that every other nation would fear Russia for being a threat to a world power. However, it wasn't good for other nations that Russia was our enemy because two nations with weapons of massive destruction opposing each other could only end badly...unless an agreement was reached.

The events that are occurring now are an accurate representation of the phrase history repeats itself. The people of the world are making a foolish mistake by allowing another Cold War to begin. Russia is challenging the authority of the United States, which can only lead to trouble for everybody living everywhere.

Surprisingly, I do believe that having a country as strong as the U.S. is a good thing. They're many pros and cons to this situation. A pro would be that not all countries have to rely on us helping them. Although, a con to that would be thta countries might think that Russia is a world power. If the U.S. has no opponet as strong as them than, how would we be able to stay as strong as we currently are. We are currently at war so this is not a good time for the U.S. and Russia to begin to argue. Afterall, this may turn out to be another cold war. All and all i think it woud be good to have a country as strong as the U.S. but, I doubt it will happen.

I dont think we should have russia as our enemy. They are the same as us in power so it wouldnt be good becase they have all the same weapons and technology as us.Plus are economy is already going down so imagine if we would get into war with russia it wouldnt be good at all.

This wouldnt be a good thing for so many reasons. for one we dont need to start another war with another country are country is bad enough as it is with all this money issues going on, so we dont need to be wasting more money on war with another country. They are as big as we are so it wouldnt be that good of a war with all the same technology coming at each other. We are just not ready to go into another war let alone have enemy.

in some ways it is kind of a good thing. in some ways not. it would be kind of bad because the U.S. is really strong. And it would be really good if they were fighting along side with you. BUt even though it some ways its good that doesnt mean you have to start a war. Why can everyone just live in peace?

i think that having a another country as powerful as the u.s is a good thing and a bad thing. its a good thing because if the u.s and russia were to team up and be in a alliance then the u.s would become even stronger. but its a bad thing because if russia is our ememy and is just as strong as us, if we were to go to war the war would last a really long time because the u.s and russia are equaly strong. and the war would just result in many deaths and leave both countries less powerful then before.

This is kind of bad and good. It is good because it could strenghten our army more. We could build better weapons. It is also bad because we are having trouble with our economy. We have soldiers in Iraq. So if Russia does start another Cold War we might be in trouble this time. The US has more enemies that Russia could use against us.All in all, it is good because it could buid up our economy and soldiers again;and it is bad because we have our soldiers all over the world that Russia could pack with.

I don't think this is such a good idea. for the US to be out there fighting russia. it could be a near by disaster. we are strong but something might happen if we are on the same level with some other contry exspecially if we are still at war wit iraq.

it doesnt even matter. this world has issues anyways. if we have enemies just leave them be and we dont even have to communicate with them. all this fighting is un necessary and russia should just back off because they know the u.s has a better army than they do!

first of all i think if i were russia i would be scared as heck to have the US as an enemy. Have they not seen everyone one else we beat, Hitler, japan, and if they mess with us we are going to kick there butt to. they also should not be giving weapons to the enemiis of our closest ally because that is just going to tick us off more

i think that maby if they came and talk to us that maby we can come up wiht some kind of agreement like trade them some medical supplies for some crude oil and maby even ship ofer a cuppel of trucks/cars with cases of oil and fluids. and give them some knolege in how to maintis them. all in trade or inshurance they wont luanch an attake on us and have our back when we need them

I think that having an enemy as good as the u.s. is bad. why? Because they can have better technology to make bombs. I know that the russians have very dangerous weapons. Anyways we shpuld just stay away and avoid conflict with then because we are already in deep trouble with Iraq. Instead of being enemies we should become alliances and help eachother. Maybe our economy will get better if we jon with them. But we dont need any more trouble from other countries.

The things that we can do to reduce the deaths of women giving birth is we can Keep training People in the Villages to help give birth for the mothers but I believe we should invest in some new hospitals So just in case something happens. Also what if something happens that doesn't have to do with births and it can't wait for you to walk 37 miles to the nearest hospital. some other ways we can help the deaths against mothers is Provide better transportation For them to set to the hospitals at amore faster rate so their will be Fewer deaths.
