DOES AMERICA STILL HAVE AN "UNREALISTIC VISION OF BEAUTY" THAT CAUSES EATING DISORDERS, OR DOES YOUR GENERATION HAVE MORE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS?

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, "Eating disorders are extreme expressions of a range of weight and food issues experienced by both men and women. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and compulsive overeating." The typical person who struggles with this disorder is a teenage or young woman. But there is more recent evidence that among the many other groups who struggle with anorexia nervosa are prepubescent and postmenopausal women and males of all ages. As society learns more about the practices of those with issues with food and weight, the disorder itself has become more easily and quickly identified and diagnosed. However, successful treatments have remained as difficult to implement as ever.

Eating disorders have been around for a very long time. We catch glimpses of them in stories like those of the ancient Romans who gorged at feasts, then purged, or St. Catherine of Siena, who ate only herbs and vomited everything else. They were not scientifically acknowledged until the late 19th century, when British physician William Gull and French doctor Charles Lasegue both noticed incidences of "self-starvation" among adolescent girls. They believed it was tied to irrational female behavior; a common medical practice at the time linked nearly all health problems in women to female biology. In the 1930s, researchers began to realize that
eating disorders were legitimate diseases with both physical and psychological components.

Public discussions, available resources, and society's awareness of eating disorders has grown dramatically since the 1980s. In 1983, popular singer Karen Carpenter died of complications from a long battle with anorexia. People suffering with eating disorders began to appear on such early talk show television programs as Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey and Sally Jessy Raphael. The scientific community took note and began to study the phenomenon as well. It is now widely believed that eating disorders are a by-product of individuals' sometimes unacknowledged and often repressed emotional, psychological, and sociological struggles that become intricately connected to one's body image, self-esteem, and behaviors.

In order to treat any of these disorders, what must be addressed first are the underlying feelings that may be causing the person to have issues with weight and food. These may include low self-esteem, poor or inaccurate
body image, depression, anxiety, loneliness, a lack of control over one's life, perfectionism, fear, sense of failure, and troubled family and personal relationships.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterized by an intense and irrational fear of body fat and weight gain that leads to extreme and unhealthy levels of dieting, irregular eating behaviors, and unusual food preferences. Frequently a person who is struggling with anorexia nervosa engages in rigid, ritualized, and often secretive behaviors that reflect an unusually strong determination to become thinner and thinner even when the person's weight is at or below a healthy level. In many instances, such people hold a distorted misperception of their body weight and shape that is not reflected in their actual weight or the perceptions of them by others. Individuals can have episodes of engaging in behaviors associated with anorexia nervosa or struggle with the disorder for years. If extreme and left unaddressed, individuals can starve themselves to death or cause irreparable and irreversible harm to their bodies.

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by ongoing cycles of binge eating and purging. When a person engages in binge eating, he or she consumes an unusually large quantity of food in a rapid, automatic, and uncontrollable way. The typical binge eater can consume 5,000 to 10,000 calories in one episode and is often filled with self-loathing that leads him or her to want to purge what was consumed by self-induced vomiting or by resorting to a combination of excessive and restrictive dieting, excessive exercising, using laxatives and diuretics. Exercise bulimia refers to one kind of bulimia nervosa in which a person engages in a ritualized cycle of consuming a large quantity of food and then exercising in an excessive amount, usually cardio, in order to burn off the extra calories.

Binge-eating disorder or compulsive eating is characterized by periods of impulsive gorging or continuous eating. While there is no purging, there may be sporadic fasts and repetitive diets. As with bulimia nervosa, a person who struggles with compulsive eating may be of low, normal, or obese body weight. One sign of a person with such a disorder may be a high degree of fluctuation in weight in a short amount of time.

As far as we know, eating disorders are not common in every culture. They seem to be most common in the West. Some researchers and feminist groups have noted that certain cultural conditions seem to encourage the development of eating disorders. The Western media has long had an obsession with slimness, presenting it as the equivalent of beauty and happiness. The objectification of the human body, particularly among women, may further the prevalence of eating disorders in places like the Americas and Europe. While images that join thinness with happiness may not cause eating disorders by themselves, they may provide a channel for those persons pre-disposed to eating disorders to focus unhealthy impulses. They may also blind society to the seriousness of the problems eating disorders can cause.

Many organizations and resources are now available to help individuals, their families, and friends who are struggling to address any of these eating disorders. From online chat groups, autobiographies, self-help books, and support groups, every individual can find help to address an eating disorder. However, according to most eating disorder groups, rates of eating disorders continue to rise, among both sexes and all ages and ethnic groups.

Mostly, our generation still has an unrealistic vision of beauty. However, "inner beauty" is starting to take place. A few years back and years before, you'd see these "twig" models and little girls would idolize that and try starving to look exactly like that, but now, you see plus-sized women on magazines, on TV, and being famous pop-stars, which is better than seeing super skinny girls; however, I’m guessing this is why a high percentage of America is obese X_X. People who have these disorders should get some mental help. If they do, then maybe their habits may change. Also, now, more advertisement that show places, where you can go to, to be healthy are being posted to help people diet in the GOOD way (just wish more people would actually use the tips and try getting off their b00ties).

I believe that American does have an unrealistic vision of beauty.
Open a magazine, turn on your TV; your eyes will become fluttered with pictures of slim, slender, and skeleton like young women. Those young women are what girls all over the place call celebrities. Celebrities that they happen to want to be just like, even if it takes going to extreme lengths to meet such standards and feel accepted or meet the standards of what they think is "pretty". I think that the media holds much responsibility and has a large affect on influencing people of all races and all ages and sexes. American indeed has a mutated idea of what beauty is truly about.

i feel that america still has an ureelistic vision of beauty because we dont look on the inside for beauty but on the outside. if there is a defect that somebody has then we thing that they are ugly and try to avoid them all together. but i think that it does not cause eating disorders because you choose whether to eat that much or not so iat is your fault is you are skinny or big.

This beauty is in fact unhealthy and egotistic.
The only reason that people want to look like that is because their ego needs to feel satisfied and can't feel satisfied if someone else has something they don't.
People need to see what's really important. Health and well being should outweigh beauty.
They need to break free of the egotistical sense of self that has been programmed into their minds by the media.

I think america still has an unrealistic vision of beauty because they always want to look perfect how everyone on tv does.
They always have to have the more expensive clothes or the better looking cars.
So since they can't have all these thing then they want to look perfect.
They they turn to binge eating, bulimia, and anorexia. These young women think it will make them look better.
Even though it makes you look worse, makes your hair fall out, and makes your teeth yellow.

I Belive that it is the modern day survival of the fittest. With food and water, as well as territory have become almost impossible not to have, dispite any sort of real skill. So the people need a way to somehow still be better than everybody else. Causeing the looks problem.

Eating disorders have been around for a very long time. As the need for eating has grown so has all of these eating disorders. If America and other countries get rid of manufactering food then i believe that the eating disorders will lessen. But if that does happen then we all might die from starvation.

Our generation has more realistic expectations. Not saying that they are completely realistic and that theyre reasonable though. More people are learning about eating disorders and preventing them. Plus size models are definitely more accepted now than they would be in the 60's. But we still hold ourselves to ideals that are unobtainable for most of the population.

I think that america still has an unrealistic view of beauty. I think that sometimes people have eating disorders because of the people around them and the way society is. I think that there should be a facility like rehab to help those people with eating disorders.

Yes, I think that America has an unrealistic view of beauty because society and the world around them dont realy care on how people look today cause most of the populations in america is either overweight or obeise. I also think that people who has eating disorders should be put in a wieght manegement program that help them with depresion and self-esteem,and to help from the disorder that happens to both men and women.

America has many issues it must contend with, and an unrealistic vision of beauty is one of them. The primary cause for this is visual media, which holds a great influence over our generation. Because so many movie and television celebrities are an "ideal representation of beauty," many people feel that they must meet these drastically high standards. These people will attempt to imitate celebrities' bodies as closely as possible through cosmetic surgery, eating disorders, and even illegal means (i.e. steroids). It is important to combat these irresponsible methods of beauty enhancements by demonstrating proper ways to improve one's body, such as proper exercise, balanced meals, etcetera.

It's obvious that every single person on this earth sees life through their own eyes. That means everyone on this earth has thier own interpretation of beauty. Some see normal-sized person as good looking and others see a walking skeleton as handsome. Yes, i think that the public's unrealitic vision of beauty has caused people to feel uncomfortable about their weight and the way they look, but eating disorders should not be caused by that.

I think that yes America still has an unrealistic vision of beauty. Because like some people try to look better than they are. At least more people are learning about how to eat healthier and how long should they do exercise. And they always want to look better than everyone else. What they are doing is bad for their self-steem. So, they should go to someone who can really talk to them about what are the consequences of anorexia , bulimia , etc.

I believe that America still has an unrealistic view of beauty. When you watch T.V. you are constantly surrounded by somewhat good looking people. The people in our nation, mostly kids, try to recreate those "perfect bodies." Many people take this to the extreme which then cause eating disorders. Even going to school makes kids want to do whatever to get that body which can make them attractive. Many people these days worry too much about image.

Like I said, it all depends on the person for us to think us unrealistic or realistic vision of beauty.

I think that no matter what people are always going to want to have the ideal body. I think we are even more critical now then we were in the past. Friends make fun of friends and that is what truly leads to eating disorders when people you respect and consider your friends tell you that you need to loss weight. Pressure for some people now is unbearable and being humam some of us crumble under the pressure that is placed upon us.

Yes America still has an unrealistic vision of beauty. America thinks men and women who are beautiful are the men who have the perfect muscular bodies and the women who have the super skinny bodies. Everyone gets these images from magazines, TV, and the internet. I always think beauty is inside and out, if someone is very pretty but if they are mean or rude you realize that they aren’t that beautiful. If the rest of America would look at the inside of a person instead of the outside, America would not have an unrealistic vision of beauty because they wouldn’t fallow the models in magazines, TV, and the internet.

Yes, I think that America still does have an "Unrealistic vision of Beauty." Back then the most beautiful woman was considered to weigh 200 or 300 pounds. As time passed now the most beautiful women must weigh below that. Magazines, designers, and stores all look for two major things: thinness, and prettiness. With these things all surrounding our every day life, affects others with low self-esteem. This leads to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and compulsive overeating. We should stop emphasizing that the only beautiful people are the skinny ones because it is not true at-all.

I think America deffinatly does have an unrealistic image of beauty, because you shouldn't have to be the same as every one else to be beautiful. So what if you weigh more than 100 pounds. I think the movie stars and all the famous people are idols for young teens and women, that is why a lot of females have used these disorders to try to compare to them. America is supposed to be the free country, but with all this pressure on young women to be "beautiful" is wrong, i think. A lot of teens get stressed out about what clothes their wearing how their hair looks and how their make up looks, but it shouldn't be that way because in my opinnion that causes a lot of drama and even worse it can cause people to damage their health and bodies.

In order to stay thin, they may turn to eating disorders. The famous people many women and men look up too are slim and they feel that they need to be as well.

In my opinion America still shares that unrealistic vision of beauty. Whether it's in fashion shows, or in a magazine young girls look up to those and inspire to be like them. Matter of fact, i don't remember ever seeing a "big" model. they're always very skinny. and thats mainly the first thing many people see in them. it's harsh, but i don't think america even cares. everybody especially young women are dying to be thin. literally. and doing whatever it takes. throwing up, diet pill, binge eating, all of them.
they don't realize that skinny isn't everything. and that they would be alot healthier, and attractive if they didn't try so hard.
thats the part america leaves out.
and people are dying because of it.

I say this because if you simply pick up a magazine more likely than not the cover is of a slim attractive person. People our so much effected by what they see on tv and movies especially female teenagers that it messes with them. They think that if they can look perfect they will have a perfect life so they starve themselves to look skinny which is very harmful. I honestly believe that America still "idolizes" skinniness but not as much as they used to. In the "entertainment world" you are seeing more and more curvy or plump actors/actresses. I feel that America is getting used to people of all shapes instead of implying that every one should look the same. It used to be a couple years ago that the clothers (particually females) would only be made to fit tall, skinny and "flat" people. I would personally get upset because I knew girls like me wouldn't be able to fit in those clothes but since being anorexic skinny was "in" at the time I "squeezed in" the clothing. Sadly when your famous the people that adore you are the people that destroy you. For models their constantly being told to lose more and more weight. On the screen they look bueatiful but they are really unhealty. The fault for the eating disorders is equally split between all of us because we've all had our share in telling others how they can "look better, skinnier"

America has some what of an "unrealistic vision of beauty" The reason being is that the public media will most likely put a picture of a skinny or normal weighted person. You are not likely to find a well rounded person because not many people would look at it. Since their are more average people than well rounded ones many of them want to look like the average girls. When you see a guy looking at a girl 96% of the time they are looking at a skinny girl. Maybe the well rounded girls want that attetion so they develop eating disorders. It all depends on how the person thinks they look. If they are not satsified with how they look they wiil most likely develop an eating disorder.

I THINK THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE EATIN DISORDERS ARE BEING BADLY INFLUENCED BY OUR SOCIETY , ESPECIALY PEERS. WHEN THERES PEOPLE YOUR AGE THAT DONT ALLOW YOU TO BE IN THEIR GROUP OR TALK TO YOU FOR THE WAY YOU LOOK MAKES YOU FEEL BAD AND I THINK PEOPLE WHO HAVE THIS DISORDERS DO IT JUST TO FIT IN. I PERSONALY DONT THINK ITS WRONG TO DO SOMTHING TO TRY TO LOOK BETTER IF ITS GOING TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD.

I think it depends on the place because some are more tolerant than others but at the same time there are ways that they still push the " perfect" figure on people in magazines, movies, tv and more.

Mary Ann Woodyard P6 Yes America still has an unrealistic vision of beauty. And its sad that girls starve themselves just to look good on the outside and people care so much about what other people think . Girls want to be slim and slender and guys want to be buff and have muscles .Theirs nothing wrong with that at all .But we should not make that our main goal in life.We all should just be who we want to be .

Our generation ahas extreme outlooks on there image. It has an effect on people, to have to look there best all the time, and live up to the exxpectations of there peers. I think we do have this disabillity in our society.

I KNOW THAT THIS WAS DUE A LONG TIME AGO AND I DON'T EXPECT TO GET CREDIT BUT I WOULD LIKE TO RESPOND ANYWAYS !?! : D

THIS GENERATION DOES HAVE AN UNREALISTIC VIEW OF HOW BEAUTY IS PORTRAED. I FEEL THAT YOUNG BOYS AND GIRLS ARE BEING PUSHED TO LOOK THIS WAY, BE THIS WAY, TALK THIS WAY ECT.I THINK THIS IS THE MAJORITY OF THE REASON WHY PEOPLE HAVE EATING DISODERS AND FEEL LIKE SH**. THE MEDIA PLAYS A BIG ROLE IS ADVERTISING THE WAY THE BODY SHOULD LOOK AND BE. PEOPLE SHOULD LOVE THE BODY THAT THEY ARE IN AND WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM DOWN.
